This issue of Études britanniques contemporaines offers a selection of papers originally delivered at the SEAC-SAIT conference on ‘Landscape/Cityscape Situational Identity in British Literature and Visual Arts (20th-21st Centuries)’organised by Catherine Bernard, Isabelle Gadoin et Catherine Lanone at Senate House, London, in October 2017. These texts explore the ways in which the representation of space—landscapes and cityscapes—is instrumental in fashioning identity. From Modernism to the contemporary period, from the elegiac or liminal landscapes imagined by Virginia Woolf or Jon Mcgregor to Jonathan Coe’s urban topographies and to Sarah Hall’s dystopias, textual spaces fashion a collective, contradictory identity in which the subject gets involved in an ever-changing dialogue between past and present. We would like to express our gratitude to the members of the organising committee.
The volume also welcomes a section devoted to Ian McEwan’s Atonement and Joe Wright’s adaptation of the novel to the screen, building on the presentations originally delivered during a conference held at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 in January 2018. We would like to express our gratitude to the organisers of both conferences.

Les articles réunis dans ce cahier spécial sont issus d’une journée d’étude organisée par la Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines et l’unité de recherche EMMA (Études Montpelliéraines du Monde Anglophone) de l’université Paul Valéry, en janvier 2018, sur le roman de Ian McEwan, Atonement. Cette journée d’étude avait été pensée en priorité à destination des étudiant.e.s préparant l’Agrégation d’anglais, le roman de McEwan figurant au programme du concours en 2018 et 2019. Elle a été l’occasion d’un point tant critique qu’historique sur ce roman phare de la fiction anglaise contemporaine.
